Family of 4 from Creston, Iowa, found dead in Mexico; officials suspect gas leak

What was otherwise planned as a beautiful vacation for the Creston family of four became an event that today shocks the entire United States and is the death of the family, according to the police in this country.

Kevin, Amy, Sterling and Adrianna Sharp did not return home on Wednesday as expected, according to a Creston police spokeswoman. They had left for Tulum, Mexico, on the Yucatan Peninsula, earlier this month.

Close family members reported to the Creston Police Department early Friday morning to report the family missing, police said. Reports of missing persons were entered into a national database and agents contacted the U.S. Department of State.

A family member made the Facebook tracking request for Kevin Wayne Sharp, 41, his wife Amy Marie Sharp, 38, and their children, Sterling Wayne Sharp, 12, and Adrianna Marie Sharp, 7.

However, they were found dead in a condo in Mexico where they were staying, according to Creston police.

Indeed, the U.S. State Department confirmed that the bodies of four U.S. citizens were found in Akumal, Mexico, near Tulum, on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

After finding the dead bodies of this one, autopsies are being carried out in Mexico and the results are pending, police said.

"The situation with Kevin and Amy Sharp's family is weighing heavily on our hearts and minds," said Todd Lorensen, Southwestern coach. "Their family members have been strong supporters of the southwest for years. I consider them friends. They were going to be here watching us play basketball this week.

Peterson wrote that there has been no contact from the Sharps since March 15, when they notified their families that they had arrived in Mexico safely.

Creston Police Chief Paul Ver Meer said they began investigating and determined that the Sharp family did not take their flight from Cancun back to the United States. The U.S. State Department was called along with officials in Mexico. When emergency officials went to the condo, they found the family's bodies.

So far, the causes of the deaths are unknown, and they are shocking to the United States and, of course, to friends and family.
